Ashley Hickson-Lovence: Wild East

May 22 - 6:30 pm

Free

Please join us on Weds 22nd May to celebrate the third book by the great Norwich-based wonder, Ashley Hickson-Lovence!

After the huge success of Ashley’s first two novels, The 392 and Your Show – both of which we’re proud to say were launched at The Book Hive – we are thrilled to be hosting the launch of his third book, and this time it’s for young adults and adults still young at heart.

Wild East is a novel-in-verse, inspired by the Ashley’s own experiences, which promises to be yet another literary gem that cuts right to the heart of life today with panache and humour, as we’ve come to expect from this brilliantly talented young writer…

Pen in one hand, on my wrist, a ticking clock. I’ve got to make this work, just need a little luck… When fourteen-year-old Ronny’s life is struck by tragedy, his mum decides it’s finally time they move out of East London.

In his new city, as a Black teenager in a mostly white school, Ronny feels like a complete outsider and struggles to balance keeping his head down with his ambition of becoming a rapper. But when a local poet comes into class, Ronny discovers a world he’s never considered before. Rap is like spoken word, lyrics equal poetry – and maybe the combination of both could be the key to achieving his dreams? And the new city that Ronny moves to…? Norwich, of course!

moving to this new city
full of pubs for pint-drinking white men
wearing bootcuts with shoes
and showing off neck tattoos
and random people saying hello to you

someone said there’s only one Black barber in this whole city
and the buses are the wrong colour
just like me in my new city

Come and find out how Ronny’s struggle becomes “a powerful story of resilience, friendship, discovery and growth” (Jeffrey Boakye), and hear Ashley reading in the middle of the very city that the book is set in!

Of course there’ll be time after the reading for questions and discussion, and a chance to get your book signed.
