Damon Young and Sarah Perry: ‘The Art of Reading’
August 10 - 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm
Damon Young is the author of The Art of Reading, a celebratory tribute to one of our most under-appreciated skills. In it, he reminds us just how miraculous the process of reading is: through a series of scratches and dots we, the reader, can create whole worlds and lives lived only in our imaginations.
Young defines six Aristotelian ‘virtues’ – curiosity, patience, courage, pride, temperance, and justice – which he argues will make us better readers, embracing them wholeheartedly himself on the winding tour of literature threaded through his pages. Young unpicks what we can take away from authors as diverse as Arthur Conan Doyle, Virginia Woolf, Robert A. Heinlein, and even the creator of the Batman comics…
On a special trip over from Australia, Damon is coming here, to the Book Hive, to be interviewed by none other than Sarah Perry (who, along with Deborah Levy, Melissa Harrison, Henry Hitchings, and George Szirtes has declared herself a massive fan of Young’s work).
