National Bee Day with Helen Jukes & Dan Harris
May 20, 2019 - 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm
Join us for an evening of bee celebration – and find out about a new initiative that YOU can get involved in to help look after our buzzing friends!
Helen Jukes’ is the author of “strange, beautiful, unexpected, precise and exquisite” (Helen Macdonald) memoir about a year of keeping honeybees called ‘A Honeybee Heart Has Five Openings’. Entering her thirties, Helen felt trapped in an urban grind of office politics and temporary addresses – disconnected, stressed. Struggling to settle into her latest job and home in Oxford, she realised she needed to effect a change to create a meaningful life for herself, one that could accommodate comfort and labour and love. When friends gave her the gift of a colony of honeybees – according to folklore, bees freely given bring luck – Helen embarked on her first full year of beekeeping. As Helen grappled with her role in the delicate, awe-inspiring ecosystem of the hive, the very act of keeping seemed to open up new perspectives, deepen friendships old and new, and make her world come alive.
Dan Harris is founder of Bee Saviour Behaviour, a group committed to saving the bee population and raising awareness of the importance of the insects. He has invented an innovative bee life-saving device – a credit-card sized card with bubbles containing a pre-made sugar solution inside. If a person sees an exhausted bee they can peel back a sticker, reveal the solution, and place the card next to the tired insect – allowing the bee to drink and restore its energy. As Dan says, “we are trying to inspire people to connect with the bees in their local neighbourhood. In cities we don’t feel like we are connected to nature but there is nature all around us – we just don’t spot it. Hopefully Norwich can lead the way and show what a bee friendly city is like!”
Come and meet both of these extraordinary people at the Book Hive this National Bee Day! Expect an evening all about bees, community, and connecting with nature – Helen will be discussing her book, while Dan will be telling us all about his initiative!
6:30pm start (doors approx. 6:15pm).
