New Tricks Poetry Workshop: Byte-sized poetry (with Alice Willitts)

November 21, 2019 - 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Whether you are curious to expand your poetry horizons or just want to try something new, New Tricks is for you.

New Tricks is a series of free, informal poetry workshops (see here for the full Autumn/Winter ’19 programme) based on the particular fixations of the facilitators – from rhyme, to the languages of coding, to Gertrude Stein. The form of each session varies from week to week depending on the topic, and every opportunity is taken to make each session engaging, interactive and ‘getatable’: no lectures and no wrong answers.

WORKSHOP THREE: Byte-sized poetry (with Alice Willitts)

What will your relationship with nature be in 2050? How will you write about, from, for or to Earth as we hit or miss our climate emissions targets? What can poets say?

Alice Willitts is the author of Dear, which finds a tender beauty in the broken. Bring your complex feelings about climate crisis and apply the grammar of computer coding to write future-nature poems. You do not need to be a programmer!

function a(t, e) {yes d[Hark]en
if (n == t)[ender]
return !0 the air passing through us;
n = p(recious)
return !1 (t)0uch me

Alice will show you how to mine the programming languages that underpin communication and use their grammar subversively in your poetry. You will play with turning the almost unimaginably huge climate crisis into byte-sized poems. www.alicewillittspoet.uk
