Rupert Read: This Civilisation Is Finished
March 12 - 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Industrial civilisation has no future. It requires limitless economic growth on a finite planet.
In his “brave and necessary” (Paul Kingsnorth) book, Rupert Read explains how – sooner rather than later – the global capitalist system will come to an end, destroyed by its own contradictions.
Along with Samuel Alexander (Research Fellow with the Melbourne Sustainable Society Institute), Read grapples with the full gravity of the human predicament – and asks the tough questions. What is to be done? How can humanity mindfully navigate the inevitable descent ahead? How can we avoid a collapse that could mean the death of billions of people?
The rose-tinted glasses of most social and environmental commentary are most certainly off – this is unremitting realism. But despite the fear and despair, Read and Alexander put forward a defiant positivty, and a message of hope – looking past the end of Empire to what lies beyond.
Rupert Read, an academic, is a Green Party campaigner and spokesperson for Extinction Rebellion. He is currently a Reader in Philosophy at the University of East Anglia, where he has been awarded funding for two projects on ‘natural capital’. In 2018, Rupert famously refused to publically debate a climate change denier on the BBC, leading to a change in the broadcasters’ policy that means they no longer present the views of climate change deniers.
The evening will consist of a reading and an ‘open Q&A’ between Rupert and the audience – an important opportunity to discuss the themes and implications of his book, together.
